Public transportation

Moscow has a well-developed extensive network of public transport. Year by year, the capital becomes more convenient for the tourists and its residents: new metro stations and even whole lines are being opened, special lanes are allocated on the highways for buses and taxis, a bicycle rental network is growing, new services such as car-shating are opening. In comparison with other European capitals, the fares of the capital’s transport are not too high.

The transport system of Moscow is extensive and ramified. The routes of public transportation around the city can be calculated using online maps or special applications for smartphones, for example, “Yandex.Transport” or 2GIS. If you use paper maps, make sure that they were issued no more than a year ago, as the transport system in Moscow is rapidly growing and improving.

This is No. 1 transport in the capital: fast, comfortable, inexpensive. There are metro stations in almost all parts of the city, and there are no subway systems in the world equal to Moscow Metro in terms of the minimum intervals between trains: during peak hours, trains run at intervals of less than a minute. The metro operates from 06:00 am to 01:00 am. The cost of the trip by subway in 2018 is 55 rubles (per ticket for one trip), with the “Troika” card it is only 36 rubles.

Information stands can be found in the lobby of central stations (for example, “Arbatskaya”, “Kievskaya”). There you can get city maps and metro maps in Russian or English. Operators who speak English will recommend you the best route around Moscow.

The Moscow metro is not only a transport system, but also a true underground museum. Many stations look like palaces, and are recognized as monuments of architecture. The tour of the metro is a must-have adventure on the tourist list.

Ground public transport

These are buses, trams, trolleybuses and minibuses on the roads of Moscow. For today Moscow offers about a thousand routes! By bus, you can reach any area of the big city. Depending on the popularity of the route, the interval is from 5 to 20 minutes and often depends on traffic. However, on the main highways buses and trolleybuses run along the dedicated lanes – they less get off the schedule.

Buses, trolleybuses and trams start to run at 05:00 – 07:00 and end at 21:30 – 01:00 depending on the traffic situation. Be sure to study the schedule on the website of Mosgortrans. However, in Moscow there are also night buses available. Most of the routes converge in the center on Lubyanka Square, and from there they leave to different ends of the capital. The interval of movement is 30 minutes.

The tickets for the metro and ground public transport are unified. The bus ticket can be bought from the driver, but it is better (and cheaper) to do it in advance.

In Moscow there are many companies offering taxi services. A few years ago, private cats were popular in the city – a taxi “was called” by raising your hands on the street. It was unsafe, expensive, often fraudulent. Today in the city it is almost impossible to meet illegal drivers, their place was taken by official companies, the cost of a trip for a passenger is absolutely transparent, and in airports and train stations, as a rule, the price is fixed. In many cars you can pay for a trip not only with cash, but also with a bank card, and receive a cash receipt.

You can call a taxi by phone, but it’s easier to use the application – Yandex.Taxi, Uber or Gett. The application will show you at once which car will arrive, the driver’s name and how much the trip will cost. The price is formed depending on demand.

Suburban trains

In the suburbs it’s easiest to use a suburban train. They depart from nine railway stations, each of which serves one or several destinations. The cost depends on the distance of the trip. Tickets are sold at the ticket offices or terminals near the stations and railway platforms.

The schedule can be found on the carrier’s website or via special mobile applications.
